After a nearly two-year absence from the racing circuit of yachts designed by three-time America’s Cup winner Russell Coutts, the Mascalzone Latino Audi Team is back racing on its own RC44 yacht at the RC44 Valencia Cup, the fourth event of the Championship Tour 2010.
Organized by Consorcio Valencia 2007 in conjunction with the Real Club Nautico Valencia, the Spanish Sailing Federation and the Valencia Community Sailing Federation and in co-operation with the RC44 Class Association, the Valencia Cup kicks off tomorrow, July 27th, with a match race event held over the first two days. The warning signal of the first race is scheduled tomorrow at 1pm.
The team of Vincenzo Onorato, who will also take the helm during the fleet races that start on Friday, consists of Tommaso Chieffi, tactician, Matteo Savelli, helmsman in the match races and trimmer in the fleet races, Paul “Flipper” Westlake, mainsail trimmer, Andrea Ballico and Lorenzo De Felice, trimmers, Danilo Arvigo, grinder, Davide “Manolo” Scarpa, pitman, Daniele Fiaschi, bowman and Benedetta Danti, afterguard.
The level of the eleven competitors that will battle it out on Valencia’s waters is the highest possible in the sport of sailing while the race area will be placed right in front of the famous Malvarrosa beach, home of the last two America’s Cup editions. The RC44 fleet will indeed see some of the world’s most famous match racers among its crews, including Russell Coutts, Paul Cayard, Terry Hutchinson, James Spithill, Cameron Appleton, Ray Davies and Markus Wieser.
